. Hawthorne also uses examples of what happened in the past to create a sense of realism in the story. He looked up to the sky, doubting whether there really was a heaven above him. Hardly had he spoken when he found himself amid calm night and solitude, listening to a roar of the wind which died heavily away through the forest. Brown sees that the other convert is Faith. Goodman Brown wonders why his father and grandfather never told him about their relationship with the man, but he immediately changes his mind and realizes that if there had been any bad rumors about them, they would have been kicked out of New England, since the community is so holy.
He uses the fact that everything is not what it seems to create a longer lasting impact on his audience. The deacons of many a church have drunk the communion wine with me; the selectmen of divers towns make me their chairman; and a majority of the Great and General Court are firm supporters of my interest. But he does not yet enter the clearing and join the throng, and the possibility that Faith might not be there keeps him from declaring himself a sinner. In any case, it will never be the same; he becomes suspicious, cautious, reserved. This is an example on Goodman Brown not being able to push down his intuition. He became afraid and distrustful of everyone around him.
Throughout the story Young Goodman Brown, Goodman Brown finds himself in the struggle between good and evil. Of course, one can also recognize that Good Cloyse also only lets down her appearance of goodness when she is in the forest; after all, Goodman Brown thought her unimpeachably good for all these years. This is the time during the Salem witch trials. Goodman Brown asks how he will be able to look his minister in the face if he goes on with the business they have planned. He feels guilty for being in the forest and so hides behind the trees again. All the main characters are deceiving to Goodman Brown, and he sees they are corrupt.
When Hawthorne started writing novels in1850 he then used his name instead of publishing them anonymously. It is this open-ended choice that makes Hawthorne's story seem psychologically realistic. But now your good worship will lend me your arm, and we shall be there in a twinkling. I would not for twenty old women like the one hobbling before us that Faith should come to any harm. But, since the reader decides it leads to many interpretations, somehow each of those take away common themes: everyone is corruptible, therefore becoming capable of evil and deceit that is unexpected. Once he has made the decision to go down to the woods tonight he was always going to be in for a big surprise. After that the two travelers come across an old lady.
In the story, the characters that are mentioned are Young Goodman Brown, Faith, Goody Cloyse, Deacon Gookin, the Old Man, and the minister. The man continues on the path alone. But no, no; 't would kill her to think it. But Goodman Brown looked sternly and sadly into her face, and passed on without a greeting. Finally, he sees Faith, still wearing her pink ribbons. Though the surrounding nature has gotten darker and more ominous as Goodman Brown walked deeper into the woods, his desperation makes him turn to nature: he leans against a tree, and looks to the stars for a reminder of heaven, as if the stars could guide him now that the minister and deacon no longer can. The first, and most prominent, similarity in these two stories is theme.
Goodman finds that people who were respected and held positions of power were the ones who were connected to Satan and worshipped the devil. The deacon expresses excitement for a meeting that night, and says that there will be people there from all over New England, as well as some Indians who know a lot about deviltry and a young woman who will be inducted. All the main characters are deceiving to Goodman Brown, and he sees they are corrupt. He had taken a dreary road, darkened by all the gloomiest trees of the forest, which barely stood aside to let the narrow path creep through, and closed immediately behind. On the Sabbath day, when the congregation were singing a holy psalm, he could not listen because an anthem of sin rushed loudly upon his ear and drowned all the blessed strain. His friends go along without him. The four blazing pines threw up a loftier flame, and obscurely discovered shapes and visages of horror on the smoke wreaths above the impious assembly.
This also creates a sense of realism to the story because of the actual facts that the story holds. Cloyse and Martha Carrier bring in another person. But, the history is important to understand what type of evil the thesis is describing. The main things in the story that made the gothic elements stick out to me are some of the settings, and characters, and events that happen within the story. In 2012, Playscripts Inc. He seems to think he can just dip a toe into sin and then draw back, no harm done. When he hears his wife's voice in the trees, he calls out but is not answered. The setting becomes frightening, and the challenges become more tought. The governor and I, too—But these are state secrets. They tell me that some of our community are to be here from Falmouth and beyond, and others from Connecticut and Rhode Island; besides several of the Indian powwows, who, after their fashion, know almost as much deviltry as the best of us.
Hawthorne uses the dreadful anthem as the church congregation singing a church hymn. Its subject to "had reference to secret sin"; it too is "tinged rather more darkly than usual with the gentle gloom" of its author's temperament; and it, too, Hawthorne may well have felt, was his most powerful effort to that time. During these years, Hawthorne learned his art of story writing, and sketching; those of which ae still unique to Hawthorne. By using these examples of real events, Hawthorne is able to draw the reader in and help them understand what was going on in the time period. There is an older man in the woods representing him in the future. Freedom is a point of perspective and not a point of a state of being. The trees are damp with dew instead of on fire.
