Which brings me to my second point, the insufferable current of paternalism that runs throughout the story.

Teaching ‘The Kite Runner’ With The New York Times
I think I never disliked a protagonist as much as I disliked the narrator of this story. Amir teaches Sohrab how to fly kites and volunteers to act as Sohrab's "runner. I was agitated that I couldn't continue reading Kite Runner never. We all make errors, large ones included, such as violating someone's confidence. Hassan refuses to give up the kite, and Assef humiliates him by assaulting him both physically and sexually. After the Russians invade and the family is forced to flee to America, Amir realises that one day he must return to an Afghanistan under Taliban rule to find the one thing that his new world cannot grant him: redemption. He is a rich man, brimming with macho vibrancy, while his son is a different sort altogether.
