Either Jamie survived and they stayed married, or he never removed his ring as a testament to his love for Jamie. As they attend rehearsals, Landon learns that Jamie carries a Bible with her everywhere because it belonged to her mother who died a few years ago. Jamie dies and in the end of the book Landon is still very much in love with her.
Landon reluctantly agrees, wondering if he really even had an option the saying no to her request. The novel received mixed reviews from critics. Landon soon discovers that purpose and asks Jamie to marry him, even in her weakened state. To her surprise, Jamie insists that she can't be. Supposedly, he will now do good deeds with it. She thanks him for walking her home and seems upset by his comment but goes on stage anyway.
