Landon's grandfather, who is now deceased, was a bootlegger and banker during the Great Depression, and he built the Carter family fortune by preying on the poor. The text ends on an ambiguous spiritual note stating that Landon believes in miracles since he still wears his wedding ring from that day. Instead of the good girl falling for the bad boy, it's more of the other way round. When the knock comes on the back door, it's horrifying. Landon, thinking that she is joking, agrees to this.
As a result, Landon is given a choice by his school principal: he can either get expelled or simply devote all of his time to community service. The only girl available, of course, is Jamie. His best friend, Eric Hunter, who is the most popular boy in school, helps him and, to his surprise, Landon wins the election. Jamie, until the very end of the film, stays the same. The Sunday New York Post holds that it "never fails to be interesting, touching, at times riveting. That's the sort of question that's almost impossible to answer, since it goes to the "magic" of writing and no author can fully explain it. Against all odds their love overcomes it all.

But their love story will soon turn to tragedy. In response, Landon demanded an explanation, and Jamie revealed that he was dying of leukemia. Landon and Jamie visit the orphanage one day to discuss a possible showing of The Christmas Angel, but their proposal is quickly rejected by Mr. Nevertheless, destiny has a habit of bringing people who are secretly perfect for each other together. I was in love, and the feeling was even more wonderful than I ever imagined it could be. In the novel, Landon is frustrated as a result of the whole school knowing that he is walking Jamie home, and they are making fun of him for it.
It's also Landon's journey of growth and redemption, which stems from his first experience with love, and concludes with bittersweet loss. Landon knows he loves Jamie and knows he would have wanted to marry her even if she had never been ill. Landon's father pressures him into running for class president. The next day at the first show of The Christmas Angel, Jamie enters the stage in angelic garb, simply pronouncing his line to Landon, "You're beautiful," and this is the first time in a real sense. Either Jamie survived and they stayed married, or he never removed his ring as a testament to his love for Jamie. As they attend rehearsals, Landon learns that Jamie carries a Bible with her everywhere because it belonged to her mother who died a few years ago. Jamie dies and in the end of the book Landon is still very much in love with her.
Landon reluctantly agrees, wondering if he really even had an option the saying no to her request. The novel received mixed reviews from critics. Landon soon discovers that purpose and asks Jamie to marry him, even in her weakened state. To her surprise, Jamie insists that she can't be. Supposedly, he will now do good deeds with it. She thanks him for walking her home and seems upset by his comment but goes on stage anyway.
