The Storyteller is a short story written by Mario Vargas Llosa that tells the story of a group of children who gather around an old man to listen to his stories. The old man, known as the "Storyteller," is a traveling performer who tells stories to children in exchange for food and shelter.

He was very adjusting and accommodating, and could live wherever he was posted, whether in a tent or a dilapidated building. Leo Stein is a lawyer with the Department of Justice who hunts war criminals. Nikolai Leskov 1831-1895 is not one of the most famous Russian authors here in the West. And the other children concur, but the aunt is incensed, telling the bachelor it is most improper and has undermined years of careful teaching. Not exactly a good story, in short. He was a hard, unsympathetic man, the aunt decided in her mind. Evidently her reputation as a story- teller did not rank high in their estimation.

The bachelor is almost like a child himself, as he rejects the ''happy ending'' for the good little girl in his story - and, of course, the three children are thrilled when Bertha gets eaten by the wolf, showing that moral and upright behavior doesn't always end well. Poe's writing even since I read "The Pit and the Pendulum" in high school. The children on the train love this story, but the aunt is angry because she feels it sets a bad example.
