Tom also shows pride. The two reconnect and start an affair, making Nick feel like the odd one out. Daisy Buchanan and the Treatment of Women Her character is often deeply romanticized, with her actions painted as those of a woman torn between what she knows is right and her inability to guide her own life. Nick doesn't tell Tom that Daisy was at the wheel. In this way the families with any social background became able to make fortune. He worked hard and remained focused. Tom and Daisy are corrupted in many ways shown throughout the book.
Still, her callous treatment of Gatsby at the end of the novel, seen through her refusal to attend his funeral and dismissal of the destruction she caused, is hard to empathize with. This novel is still the best seller in America. He insists they all go to New York City. Although Tom had a mistress himself, he was furious that his wife cheated on him. Soon Nick and Tom and Myrtle head to their tryst apartment for a wild orgy.

What makes the book so great is that the writing is well done, the characters are interesting and psychologically complex, and the setting gives readers a realistic idea of the social class difference in the 1920s Long Island and New York City. Like Gatsby, Nick says, all people must move forward with their arms outstretched toward the future, like boats traveling upstream against the current of the past. In the novel, Gatsby is ironically compared to the figure of Jesus Christ, the Son of God who is considered as the greatest example of a moral and virtuous person. He moves to East Egg, the slightly less grand area in comparison to West Egg, right opposite Gatsby's mansion. It was corrupted by money and the desire for social climbing. As the summer unfolds, Gatsby and Nick become friends and Jordan and Nick begin to see each other on a regular basis, despite Nick's conviction that she is notoriously dishonest which offends his sensibilities because he is "one of the few honest people" he has ever met.
