The Bigtree alligator-wrestling dynasty is in decline, and Swamplandia! Before they reach the house, Ava pulls Kiwi toward the Swamplandia makeshift museum. So Ava, trusting her body's reaction more so than her mind and emotions, decides to run. There is one lovely book-related quote: Heaven, Kiwi thought, would be the reading room of a great library. Was it the point at which the narrative branches off into two tracks, following the separate adventures of the protagonist's wayward brother? In a way, an ending to the narrative seems needful once the characters accept that Swamplandia is lost, yet Ava's optimism seems remote and insubstantial. .
. But my critiques would be merciless in those cuddle-workshop sessions, because sweet young Karen just isn't there yet. . Russell is an excellent writer, despite the occasional split infinitive personal pet peeve , and her story sparked some truly rich and engaging discussion one particularly fine April evening. She does not know if her sister, Ossie, is still alive. And that leaves 13-year-old Ava, the first-person narrator of the story.

There is no "woo hoo" in this book at all. I loved the idea of 'Swamplandia! This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. Why so many kind notices in the literary world? The sisters spend most of their time attempting to rid their land of a noxious weed-tree once planted there by some ambitious farmers to soak up all the swamp water so the land could be cultivated. They own and live in a tourist trap called Swamplandia! The bear has been taught to bob his head when the song "Somewhere over the Rainbow" is played. . All the time that Russell weaves her mythology, she plants quiet but insistent markers of the "human" realm-—Chief Bigtree's warning that alligators in the wild are not like the Seths, a radio playing golden oldies deep within the boudaries of "the underworld," subtle markers rather than foreshadowing of the reckoning Ava faces once it is no longer possible to "go on pretending" as the Birdman suggests. Which of the Bigtree tribe members paid the most respect to tradition? That she met with the use of a Ouija board? While wandering through the woods, Ava and Ossie discover that a very old boat has been washed up a canal and become stuck on the vegetation.
But Ava's rape didn't serve any purpose at all. There is such complexity here——enough, surely, to fuel many more hours of discussion and countless paragraphs for this review. But this may have been too dark and sad even for me, not saved by an end that felt tacked-on. She wraps her fingers around her own arm and worries that the poor diet they have been fed since their mother's death is making them all unhealthy.
