Summary of demon lover
"The Demon Lover" is a short story by Elizabeth Bowen that tells the story of a woman named Kathleen Drover who receives a mysterious letter on the eve of World War II. The letter is from her former fiancé, Major Brendan Archer, who she had not heard from in 20 years. Brendan had broken off their engagement before leaving to fight in World War I, and Kathleen had since married and had a child. Despite her reservations, Kathleen is drawn to Brendan and decides to meet him at the train station.
As she waits for Brendan's train to arrive, Kathleen becomes increasingly anxious and begins to have doubts about seeing him again. She starts to fear that Brendan may not be the same man she once knew and may have changed in ways that she cannot accept. When Brendan finally arrives, Kathleen is relieved to find that he looks exactly as she remembered him. However, as they spend more time together, she begins to realize that there is something off about him. He seems distant and preoccupied, and Kathleen begins to feel that he is not fully present in their interactions.
As the day wears on, Kathleen becomes more and more uneasy about Brendan. She starts to feel as though he is not really there with her and that he is only a shadow of his former self. Eventually, Kathleen realizes that Brendan is not the man she once knew and that he has been possessed by a demon. Terrified, she flees from him and returns home, where she is relieved to find that her husband and child are safe.
