"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" is the seventh installment in the Star Wars film franchise, and the first in the sequel trilogy. It was released in 2015 and directed by J.J. Abrams. The film takes place approximately 30 years after the events of "Return of the Jedi," and follows a new set of characters as they navigate a galaxy under the control of the tyrannical First Order.
The film opens with a prologue set on the desert planet of Jakku, where we see a group of rebels led by Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) attempting to retrieve a map that leads to the location of the missing Jedi Knight, Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill). The rebels are attacked by the First Order, and Poe is able to entrust the map to his droid, BB-8, before being captured.
Meanwhile, on Jakku, we are introduced to Rey (Daisy Ridley), a scavenger who ekes out a living salvaging the wreckage of the past. As the three of them try to evade the First Order and find the rebels, they are aided by Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew), who have been out of the fight for some time. Han is reluctant to get involved again, but he is convinced by the urgency of the situation and the potential of Rey and Finn as the next generation of heroes.
The group eventually makes their way to the rebel base on the planet D'Qar, where they meet General Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher) and join forces with the resistance in their fight against the First Order. They learn that the First Order is led by the mysterious Supreme Leader Snoke (Andy Serkis) and his enforcer, the evil Kylo Ren (Adam Driver). Kylo is revealed to be the son of Han and Leia, and he has turned to the dark side and joined the First Order.
As the resistance prepares for a final showdown with the First Order, Rey discovers that she has the potential to use the Force and begins to receive guidance from a mysterious voice. She eventually comes face to face with Luke Skywalker, who has been in hiding and has become a recluse. The film ends with a cliffhanger, as Rey presents Luke with his old lightsaber, hinting at the potential for further adventures in the sequel trilogy.
