Sphere is a science fiction novel written by Michael Crichton, first published in 1987. The story follows Norman Johnson, a psychologist who is recruited by the United States military to participate in a top-secret mission to investigate a mysterious spacecraft that has been discovered at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean.

Norman is joined by a team of experts, including a mathematician, a biochemist, and a physicist, as they set out to explore the spacecraft and try to understand its purpose. As they delve deeper into the mystery, they uncover a series of clues that suggest the spacecraft may not be of human origin, and may have been sent by an advanced alien race.

As the team struggles to make sense of the clues and decipher the purpose of the spacecraft, they are faced with a series of challenges and dangers, including the threat of a nuclear explosion and encounters with hostile marine life.

As they race against time to unravel the mystery, they are forced to confront their own fears and biases, and to reevaluate their assumptions about the nature of reality. In the end, they discover that the spacecraft is actually a sphere, a highly advanced alien device designed to test the limits of human intelligence and to challenge humanity's understanding of the universe.

Sphere is a thrilling and thought-provoking novel that explores the themes of science, technology, and the human condition. It is a classic work of science fiction that has been widely praised for its compelling plot, well-developed characters, and imaginative world-building.

A complete book, suitable for those looking for strong emotions, but at the same time looking for stimuli for reflection: 5 stars +.

In a science fiction short novel Roadside Picnic written in 1971 by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky, there is a "golden sphere" present which is rumored to have the power to fulfill the deepest human wishes. Sphere is a first-rate white-knuckle story set deep underwater, with strong sci-fi themes in the form of potential contact with alien life. Nevertheless, this novel is fun, easy on the brain, and drowning in enough cheese to make this a guilty pleasure. This lapse of the facts has two major effects on the reader.

In the middle of the South Pacific, a thousand feet below the surface of the water, a huge vessel is discovered resting on the ocean floor. It gives them the power to do what they think, it causes destruction. Besides examining the power of the mind to create reality which has a literary correspondence as well , Crichton explores the possible application of Jungian psychology to group dynamics, especially as represented in the release of man's dark inner side. He uses a lot of foreshadowing to crank up the tension; often, but not always, these hints come true. I understand the criticisms though. The book opens with an extremely promising, thought-provoking concept that is too quickly and unfortunately abandoned: Beneath the modern-day ocean a ship thought to be alien, sunken for three hundred years, turns out to be The USS StaR Voyager, having apparently traveled through time to get there. Sphere is mostly story and less of Crichton trying to "teach" us something i.

She survives for most of the book, but is killed when the giant squid manifested by Harry attacks the habitat at one point in the book. Through these short stories Poe took the process of using clues to figure out the identity of a criminal and made the protagonist look at all the evidence and reason his way to the answer.
