Something the Lord Made is a 2004 biographical drama film directed by Joseph Sargent and written by Peter Silverman and Robert Caswell. The film tells the true story of Vivien Thomas, an African American surgical technician, and Alfred Blalock, a white heart surgeon, who together developed a groundbreaking procedure to treat blue baby syndrome, a condition that caused newborn babies to turn blue due to a lack of oxygen in their blood.

The film stars Mos Def as Vivien Thomas and Alan Rickman as Alfred Blalock, and follows their partnership from the early 1930s to the 1950s. The movie begins with Thomas, a young carpenter, being offered a job as a surgical technician by Blalock, who is impressed by Thomas's intelligence and manual skills. Despite facing significant racial discrimination and being paid significantly less than his white counterparts, Thomas becomes a key member of Blalock's team and plays a crucial role in the development of the procedure to treat blue baby syndrome.

One of the strengths of Something the Lord Made is its strong performances by Mos Def and Alan Rickman. Both actors bring depth and complexity to their characters, and their chemistry on screen is palpable. Rickman, in particular, gives a nuanced and powerful performance as Blalock, portraying him as a complex and flawed individual who ultimately learns to see Thomas as an equal.

Another strength of the film is its depiction of the racial discrimination faced by Thomas and other African Americans in the early 20th century. The movie does not shy away from showing the harsh realities of segregation and the everyday acts of racism that Thomas faces, making it a poignant and relevant commentary on the issues of race and inequality.

Overall, Something the Lord Made is a well-acted and thought-provoking film that tells an important and inspiring true story. It is a poignant reminder of the importance of perseverance and the power of teamwork, and is highly recommended for fans of biographical dramas.

If you are not "moved" by this film, you'd better check your pulse. Vivien Thomas co-authored an excellent book, entitled "Partners of the Heart," in which he chronicled his experiences in helping to develop the surgical treatment for "blue baby" syndrome. When applying, he was told that the only drawback was a tough to please employer named Alfred Blalock. Mos Def completely blew me away. Of course, clinical grade wearables are not without flaws. There is no emotional wall between actor and audience. Perhaps that's one of the signs of good directing--truly caring about your characters and the story you're telling.

. Was there doubt in anyone's mind that Thomas came to love Blalock when his footing became unsure after hearing his colleague's fate or when he thanked his friends who "could not be here" when finally receiving his long overdue acknowledgment? Where people of certain races, religions, and genders are all discriminated against by the people in this world who are supposed to help them. . Subtitles are available in English, French, and Spanish. How did that missed opportunity affect his career? In addition, relatively fine detail for a DVD is evident in the brighter scenes and in many of the close-ups of actor's faces and their clothing. But Mos Def, whom I had never seen before, really blew me away with his nuanced performance of Vivien Thomas. He plays a man who had more character in his little finger than most people find in their whole lives, and he does it with zero ham.

Needless to say Rickman and Def captivate us throughout the film--their regrets, frustrations, bonding, harmony and abrasiveness found between any two historic collaborators. A most talented individual in many ways. This is the story of Dr. The depiction of the incredible bravery of Blalock, Taussig, and Thomas, who were embarking on not just uncharted, but forbidden surgical waters, warned that if such an "adventure" went awry, they'd be "on their own", made me feel timid and lacking in fortitude, by comparison. The script is well written by Peter Silverman, a multiple Emmy award-wining writer along with excellent direction from Joseph Sargent. HBO has been doing so many good movies, particularly movies on segregation and bigotry in African American history.

The names of the residents in this film are names I have heard throughout my career. Alan Rickman does a splendid job portraying Dr. His performance was highly nuanced and intricately textured in contrast to Blalock's arrogant and eruptive character. The acting was superb. And look what that relationship was able to achieve! Alfred Blalock and his lab assistant, Vivien Thomas, at John Hopkins University in the 1940s. It was a reminder that we have moved from such a terrible time in our countries existence! This movie was heartwarming, inspiring, touching. Structured through parables primarily sung but also enacted through puppetry, storytelling, and skits; the main point of the film is to translate complex philosophical ideas into terms easily understood by a modern-day audience. Here we have the true story of a ground-breaking and unlikely team. If it is, I will be purchasing multiple copies to give as gifts. We feel what Blalock feels at that moment--the intensity of his regret and his feelings for Thomas.
