Something the Lord Made is a book by Cathleen Lewis that tells the true story of Vivien Thomas, an African American man who made significant contributions to the field of heart surgery. Despite facing significant racial barriers in his career, Thomas went on to become a pioneer in the field and a key figure in the development of open-heart surgery.
Thomas was born in New Orleans in 1910 and grew up in Nashville, Tennessee. He attended Tennessee State University, but was unable to complete his education due to financial difficulties. Despite this setback, he was determined to pursue a career in medicine and eventually landed a job as a lab assistant at Johns Hopkins University. It was here that he met Dr. Alfred Blalock, a renowned cardiac surgeon who would become his mentor and collaborator.
Under Dr. Blalock's guidance, Thomas developed a deep understanding of cardiac anatomy and physiology, and was instrumental in the development of new surgical techniques. One of their most significant achievements was the creation of the "Blue Baby" operation, which corrected a congenital heart defect known as "tetralogy of Fallot." This surgery, which had previously been considered impossible, saved the lives of countless children and revolutionized the field of cardiac surgery.
Despite his many contributions, Thomas faced significant racial discrimination throughout his career. He was not allowed to attend medical school or perform surgery, and was often relegated to the role of lab assistant. Despite these challenges, he remained dedicated to his work and was eventually recognized for his contributions. He was given the title of "assistant to the surgeon" and was awarded an honorary degree from Johns Hopkins University.
Something the Lord Made is a powerful tribute to the life and work of Vivien Thomas, and serves as a reminder of the significant contributions that he made to the field of medicine. It is a testament to his perseverance, intelligence, and dedication, and serves as an inspiration to all those who face obstacles in their pursuit of their dreams.
