She Stoops to Conquer is a comedy of manners written by the 18th-century playwright Oliver Goldsmith. The play is set in the country house of Mr. Hardcastle, a wealthy, middle-aged man who is trying to marry off his daughter, Kate, to a wealthy young man named Charles Marlow. However, Marlow is shy and awkward around women of high social status, causing him to behave differently when he meets Kate, whom he assumes is a servant.
Kate, realizing that Marlow will only be comfortable around her if he thinks she is a servant, decides to play along and "stoop to conquer" by pretending to be a servant in order to win his affections. This ruse is complicated by the presence of Mr. Hardcastle's other guests, including Marlow's friend George Hastings and the boisterous Mr. and Mrs. Hardcastle.
As the play unfolds, the characters engage in a series of misunderstandings and mishaps, including a drunken altercation between Mr. Hardcastle and his guests, and the arrival of Marlow's tyrannical father, who threatens to disinherit him if he does not marry a wealthy woman.

The play takes place during the long and relatively peaceful reign of King George III, a time of social metamorphosis for Britain. Hastings asks if Tony would be happy to see someone else marry Constance. Later she realizes of being fooled and follows Tony off stage in a rage. . Marlow enters and yells at both Tony and Hastings for deceiving him about where he is. Kate enters; she and Marlow are introduced and Marlow immediately becomes a stuttering, bumbling mess of nerves in Kate's presence, not even able to look her in the eye. Hardcastle says she will be too young to be fashionable.
Kate is extremely on the brink of her father, such a lot so that  she dresses plainly within the evenings to suit his conservative tastes and fancifully within the mornings for her friends. Hardcastle, seeming to think this is a good idea, announces that she and Constance must retire. Samuel Johnson and Washington Irving, among others, both wrote tender biographies of Goldsmith. Act IV begins with Constance and Hastings planning their elopement. A comedic set of circumstances that finds everyone embroiled in a misunderstanding of gargantuan proportions. . .

Marlow and secret suitor of Constance She Stoops to Conquer Summary Tony Lumpkin is spoiled by his mother and belittled by his stepfather, Mr. He lets her know how wonderful she is but that they're of different classes and can't be together no matter how much he wishes it. Each, but especially the latter, is endowed with an ingenious and lively plot, a cast of excellent characters, and a vivacious delightful style. Constance finds Hastings and divulges to him that Tony must have played a trick. Everyone in this scene except Tony is acting deceptively. Hastings says that Marlow has spent so much time travelling that it is surprising he lacks confidence.
Tony enters on his way to a pub, and his mother follows him offstage, begging him to stay and spend time with them. Misdemeanours multiply, love blossoms, mayhem ensues. Act II Act II begins with young Marlow and Mr. However, Tony doesn't want his cousin, and his cousin already has a secret suitor in Mr. Hardcastle continually tries to redirect their attention by telling a story about his career in the army, but they continue to talk about which waistcoats to wear.

When he finds out that the inn isn't an inn and Kate isn't a poor relation, he's humiliated and wants to leave, but Kate wants him to stay and after proving to her father and Marlow's father that he has feelings for her and that he had been tricked, all ends well.
Marlow announces his departure, and Kate weeps at the news. Constance and Hastings both understand the situation perfectly, while the foolish and controlling Mrs. Marlow leaves Kate, and Hastings, Marlow and Tony confront one another. . Hastings and Constance ask permission to marry and, since Tony is aged and thus can of his own volition decide to not marry Constance, the permission is granted.
In the meantime, great preparations are being made at the Hardcastle home for the reception of the son of Hardcastle's old friend, and when Tony ushers in young Marlow, thinking Hardcastle merely the proprietor of the inn, he treats him with scant courtesy and orders him about, much to the older man's chagrin. . He signed the copyright for She Stoops to Conquer over to his publisher, John Newbery, to repay a debt. Act V In the final act, Mrs. Despite his acceptance into these high circles, Goldsmith was known to be deeply envious of his friends, awkward, ashamed of his physical appearance, a drunk, a gambler, and an extremely bad manager of his own money. Marlow arrives to apologize, and within the discussion over Kate, claims he barely talked to Kate. When Hardcastle shows Marlow his room, Constance meets Hastings and tells him of their mistake.
This leads to a series of mishaps, misunderstandings, and outright deception as the two men arrive at Hardcastle's home. The title, She Stoops to Conquer is a tongue in cheek reference to Kate's behavior in her relationship with young Marlow. She asks Hastings whether he thinks Constance and Tony look alike, then orders the cousins to stand back to back to show that they are the same height.
