The Ramayan is an ancient Indian epic that tells the story of Lord Rama, an avatar of the god Vishnu. It is one of the two major Sanskrit epics of ancient India, the other being the Mahabharat. The story of the Ramayan begins with the birth of Rama and his brothers, who are the sons of King Dasharatha of Ayodhya. Rama is the oldest and is the rightful heir to the throne, but his stepmother Kaikeyi, who is one of the king's wives, plots to have her own son Bharata installed as the king instead. In order to fulfill her wishes, Kaikeyi convinces the king to banish Rama to the forest for 14 years.
Rama, accompanied by his wife Sita and his brother Lakshmana, willingly goes into exile and spends his time in the forest performing good deeds and protecting the people from demons. While in exile, Sita is abducted by the demon king Ravana, who takes her to his kingdom of Lanka. Rama and Lakshmana set out to rescue Sita, aided by an army of monkeys led by the monkey king Hanuman.
After a long and difficult battle, Rama and his army are able to defeat Ravana and rescue Sita. Rama and Sita are finally able to return to Ayodhya, where Rama is crowned king and rules justly for many years. The story of the Ramayan teaches the values of righteousness, duty, and devotion, and it is an important cultural and religious text for Hindus around the world.
