New Market Rebels is a book published in 2017 by J. Scott Armstrong, a professor at the Wharton School of Business. The book explores the role of rebels in the creation and disruption of markets, drawing on examples from a variety of industries and time periods.
One of the central themes of the book is the importance of contrarian thinking in driving market innovation. Armstrong argues that rebels, who challenge conventional wisdom and dare to go against the grain, are often the ones who end up creating new markets or disrupting existing ones. He cites examples such as Steve Jobs, who challenged the dominant personal computer market with the introduction of the Macintosh, and Howard Schultz, who revitalized Starbucks by introducing espresso drinks and a new business model.
Another key theme of the book is the role of uncertainty in market creation and disruption. Armstrong contends that rebels are often able to identify and exploit uncertainty in a market, whether it be a gap in consumer demand or a technological advancement that has yet to be widely adopted. He cites examples such as Airbnb, which capitalized on the uncertain regulatory environment for short-term rentals, and Tesla, which disrupted the automotive industry by introducing electric vehicles at a time when most people were still reliant on gas-powered cars.
New Market Rebels also discusses the role of leadership in market disruption. Armstrong argues that rebels are often able to succeed because they are able to inspire and motivate others to follow their vision. He cites examples such as Elon Musk, who has inspired a devoted following among Tesla owners and investors, and Mark Zuckerberg, who has been able to build a loyal user base for Facebook despite numerous controversies.
Overall, New Market Rebels provides a thought-provoking look at the role of rebels in the creation and disruption of markets. It offers valuable insights for entrepreneurs and business leaders looking to innovate and make their mark in their respective industries.
