What saves it from utter mediocrity is the performances of its three leads, who all do the best they can under the circumstances. Jack has to be optimistic and it is quite unsatisfying. And what talk it is! But if you want your philosophy to be put through it's paces, watch this! Maybe he should make another movie or two? This movie really made me think. Spock Amok is my favorite episode of SNW so far because how well and creative they did it. My mind swam with the ideas and possibilities put forth within the film.
I was hoping that they were going to go somewhere creative with the eventual reveal and I think they exceeded my expectations. It makes you wonder why you did not see it before. However, I haven't even read the book it was based on and I can say that the book must have been better. Obviously as a labor of love.
Liv Ullmann is cast as Sonia, a Norwegian physicist who shares her ideas about systems with Jack Sam Waterston , a failed American presidential candidate and much more of a pragmatist. There's nothing wrong with a point of view, and here's a movie that not only proposes one, it works hard to make the film's narrative flow work in harmony with its philosophical ambitions.
