Though the use of them is allowed to man, they are from God, and to his service and honour they must be used. Every soul that truly loves God, shall have its trials in this world fully recompensed in that world above, where love is made perfect. He exercised his ministry at Jerusalem with much success, and outlived the destruction of that city, agreeably to Christ's prediction, ch. We must yield ourselves to the word of God, with humble and teachable minds. All the children of God are born again.
Every part of Divine revelation has its use, in bringing the sinner to Christ for salvation, and in directing and encouraging him to walk at liberty, by the Spirit of adoption, according to the holy commands of God. His former sufferings; I was dead: the very same whom his disciples saw upon the cross. This epistle of James is one of the most instructive writings in the New Testament. Those are well employed who search the Bible. As the sun is the same in nature and influences, though the earth and clouds, often coming between, make it seem to us to vary, so God is unchangeable, and our changes and shadows are not from any changes or alterations in him. It is intended for our spiritual improvement; to warn the careless sinner, point out the way of salvation to the awakened inquirer, build up the weak believer, comfort the afflicted and tempted Christian, and, we may especially add, to strengthen the martyr of Christ, under the cruel persecutions and sufferings inflicted by Satan and his followers. Christ will become more precious to the believer's soul, which by his grace will become more fitted for the inheritance of the saints in light.
All these are the works of God. His eyes as a flame of fire, may represent his knowledge of the secrets of all hearts, and of the most distant events. And having mentioned the word, as a means of that grace, he gives some rules about hearing it; that it should be heard with eagerness, and received with meekness; and whatsoever is contrary thereunto should be avoided; as a forwardness to be teachers of it: wrath and anger at the doctrines of it, which do not work the righteousness of God; and all impurity and naughtiness of the mind, which must render it inattentive to it; and the rather all this should be regarded, since the word is the ingrafted word, and able to save the souls of men, Jas 1:19-21 and particular care should be had, that what is heard is put in practice, or otherwise it will be a self-deception; and such will be like a man that beholds his face in a glass goes away, and forgets what sort of a man he is; whereas, if a man looks into the glass of the Gospel hears the word attentively, remembers what he hears, and continues in it, he finds many blessed advantages in so doing, Jas 1:22-25 and then the apostle distinguishes between a vain religion, and a pure one; a vain religion is only a seeming one, and may be known to be so by a man's having no guard upon his tongue; wherefore if he thinks himself religious, he is mistaken and his heart deceived, Jas 1:26 but pure and undefiled religion, which is so in the sight of God, shows itself in a holy life and conversation in general, and particularly in visiting and assisting widows and orphans in distress, Jas 1:27. They are golden candlesticks; they should be precious and pure; not only the ministers, but the members of the churches; their light should so shine before men, as to engage others to give glory to God. . In heaven there is perfect light, and no darkness at all; in hell, utter darkness, and no gleam of light. In hearing the word, we look into it for counsel and direction, and when we study it, it turns to our spiritual life. It proves that our Lord Jesus is of the nation and family out of which the Messiah was to arise. There is no other history so old. As such they overcome the world, mortify sin, govern their own spirits, resist Satan, prevail with God in prayer, and shall judge the world. No part of Scripture more fully states the gospel, and warns against the evil of sin. See their idea of worldly wealth; but it is neither substance, nor precious.
Observe the objection Nathanael made. Paul's statements concerning grace and justification, while it abounds with earnest exhortations to the patience of hope and obedience of faith and love, interspersed with warnings, reproofs, and encouragements, according to the characters addressed. Observe, that at first there was nothing desirable to be seen, for the world was without form, and void; it was confusion, and emptiness. All who desire to profit by the word of God, must beware of prejudices against places, or denominations of men. The seven stars were emblems of the ministers of the seven churches to which the apostle was ordered to write, and whom Christ upheld and directed. We must yield ourselves to the word of God, with humble and teachable minds. Those of low degree may rejoice, if they are exalted to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom of God; and the rich may rejoice in humbling providences, that lead to a humble and lowly disposition of mind.
The faith of humble Christians understands this better than the fancy of the most learned men. And he answered, No. These events would surely come to pass; and they would begin to come to pass very shortly. The paschal lamb, in the shedding and sprinkling of its blood, the roasting and eating of its flesh, and all the other circumstances of the ordinance, represented the salvation of sinners by faith in Christ. The lights of heaven are made to serve him; they do it faithfully, and shine in their season without fail.
