Great Expectations is a novel by Charles Dickens that was first published in 1861. The story follows the life of an orphan named Pip, who is given the opportunity to rise above his humble beginnings thanks to an anonymous benefactor. Along the way, he meets a variety of memorable characters who each play a significant role in his journey.
One of the main characters in the novel is Pip, the protagonist. Pip is a kind-hearted and ambitious young man who is determined to better himself and become a gentleman. Despite his lack of wealth and education, he is determined to make the most of the opportunities that come his way.
Another important character in the novel is Estella, the beautiful and haughty young woman who is the object of Pip's affection. Estella is cold and distant, and she is used by her adoptive mother, Miss Havisham, as a tool to inflict emotional pain on men. Despite her cruelty, Pip is unable to resist his feelings for her and continues to hope that she will one day return his affections.
Miss Havisham is a wealthy and eccentric old woman who was jilted at the altar on her wedding day. She has spent the years since then living in her decaying mansion, surrounded by the remnants of her failed wedding. Miss Havisham is a complex and tragic figure who ultimately becomes a source of wisdom and guidance for Pip.
