Gladiator is a 2000 epic historical drama film directed by Ridley Scott and written by David Franzoni, John Logan, and William Nicholson. The film stars Russell Crowe as Maximus Decimus Meridius, a Roman general who is betrayed by the emperor's son and sentenced to fight as a gladiator. The film also features Connie Nielsen, Oliver Reed, and Joaquin Phoenix.
The story begins with Maximus leading the Roman army to victory against the barbarian hordes in Germania. The emperor, Marcus Aurelius, is impressed by Maximus' bravery and leadership and decides to name him as his successor, bypassing his own son, Commodus. Commodus is enraged by this and, upon the death of Marcus Aurelius, orders Maximus to be executed and declares himself the new emperor.
Maximus is captured and sentenced to fight as a gladiator in the Colosseum in Rome. He becomes a popular gladiator, winning the hearts of the people with his skill and bravery in the arena. Meanwhile, Commodus becomes increasingly tyrannical and paranoid, killing anyone who poses a threat to his rule.
Maximus learns that his family has been killed and seeks revenge against Commodus. He becomes a symbol of the people's discontent with Commodus' rule and is eventually able to confront the emperor in the Colosseum. In a final showdown, Maximus defeats Commodus and dies from his wounds, having fulfilled his desire for revenge.
Gladiator is a tale of revenge and redemption, set against the backdrop of ancient Rome. It is a story of a man who, even in the face of death, continues to fight for what he believes in and ultimately triumphs over evil.

Commodus believes that for the health of Rome, the senate must be annihilated. Its colors are mud tones at the drab end of the palette, and it seems to have been filmed on grim and overcast days. By the end of this long film, I would have traded any given gladiatorial victory for just one shot of blue skies. Garden variety example: Before Maximus meets Commodus in the Colosseum, he is reenacting a specific battle from the past. In the beginning of the movie, where the Roman army is assembled waiting for the enemy to come into the open, the Germans in the woods are chanting menacingly. Director Ridley Scott stages the fight scenes brilliantly, each more inventive and gripping than the last. The heavy infantry tactics developed quickly, striking from the flanks, encircling enemy forces and using the policy of divide and conquer. One is fighting to save his fathers life and using the money pay off gambling debts accumulated by his father.
