The genre of Stargirl can be difficult to classify, as it incorporates elements of several different genres. At its core, Stargirl is a coming-of-age story about a young girl named Stargirl who struggles to find her place in the world. As such, it can be considered a coming-of-age or coming-of-age romance novel.
However, Stargirl also has strong elements of fantasy and magical realism. Stargirl possesses unique abilities and is described as being "otherworldly," leading some readers to classify the novel as fantasy. The novel also includes elements of magical realism, such as the appearance of a talking squirrel and the concept of "uplift," which allows people to transcend their physical bodies and exist in a higher plane of existence.
In addition to coming-of-age, fantasy, and magical realism, Stargirl can also be classified as a romance novel. The novel follows Stargirl's relationship with Leo Borlock, a classmate who is initially drawn to Stargirl's unique personality but becomes increasingly self-conscious about their relationship as it becomes more public. The novel explores themes of love, acceptance, and the challenges of maintaining a relationship despite societal pressures.
Overall, Stargirl can be classified as a coming-of-age romance novel with elements of fantasy and magical realism. Its unique blend of genres makes it a compelling and thought-provoking read for readers of all ages.

It kind of reminded me of those guys who propose to their girlfriends on the Jumbotron at a sporting event--it's arrogant to assume that everyone else wants exactly what you want, and ultimately, regardless of your intentions, it makes the gesture about you, not the other person while all eyes are on that person, obligating them to behave gracefully even if they're going to pieces inside.
Susan At Leo's request, Stargirl stopped being herself and started acted like everyone else - she wore makeup, bought fashionable clothing, talked like everyone else, and called herself her real name, Susan.
