Gattaca is a 1997 science fiction film directed by Andrew Niccol and starring Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman. The film takes place in a future society where genetic engineering is a common practice, allowing people to select and design the genetic makeup of their offspring.

The film follows Vincent, a man with a natural genetic makeup, who dreams of becoming an astronaut. However, due to his natural genetics, he is discriminated against and unable to pursue his dream. Vincent is forced to resort to using the services of a company called Gattaca, which helps him forge a new identity and pass as a genetically engineered "valid."

Vincent's new identity is made possible by Jerome, a former astronaut who is now paralyzed and unable to use his own genetics. Jerome provides Vincent with a supply of his own genetic material, allowing Vincent to pass as a valid and begin working at Gattaca.

As Vincent works at Gattaca, he becomes attracted to Irene, a co-worker who is unaware of Vincent's true identity. However, their relationship is complicated by the fact that Vincent must constantly hide his true identity and maintain a strict schedule to avoid detection.

The plot takes a turn when one of Gattaca's employees is murdered and Vincent becomes a suspect. As the investigation proceeds, Vincent is forced to confront his own identity and the limitations imposed upon him by society.

Overall, Gattaca is a thought-provoking film that explores the ethical implications of genetic engineering and discrimination. It raises questions about what it means to be human and the value of natural versus engineered genetics. The film's strong performances and compelling narrative make it a must-see for fans of science fiction and social commentary.

Gattaca and the ethical views Essay Example

An understanding of Kantian ethics can be roughly started with the presumption that if we are to strictly follow the assertion that the very goal of the lives of men is the attainment of happiness in general, then every individual will most likely be inclined to seek personal gratification as well as pleasure in the very desire for happiness. That's how many, I suspect, would opt to have natural children. Vincent is entrenched in controversy as he is considered the top suspect.
