The book is very good, the action really ramps up toward the end leading to a sad but satisfying ending. Even though, up to this point, Kenny Kane has been in jail for most of Max's life, Max has had to deal with being the son of a murderer. Everyone is afraid of Max because he is bigger than everyone his age, and because he resembles his father who is a killer. After Max is kidnapped by his father, the two walk to Iggy Lee's apartment in the Testaments. .

The police arrive and Max's father is sent back to jail. He usually calls himself a "butthead" and is never confident. Kevin a kid on crutches, let me remind you sneaks out of his house, saves Max, and Killer Kane is back in jail for life. Freak the mighty is a very touching story of unlikely friendships in which a kid Kevin who is super smart, adventurous, and kind meets kind of the opposite of that in his friend Maxwell Kane who is tall, clumsy, and "stupid. Summer is over, and the boys are back in school and being taunted by the other kids in class. Has prison changed him? Iggy does not want to do this. With the two main characters being such polar opposites, I feel the story could have benefitted from having alternating narrators—switching between Maxwell and Kevin.
