Conclusion Desai showed us along with various characters in the novel that women or men, every person feels deprivation and abundance in their lifes. We are shown the intimate details of a family consisting of two sisters, a son, and their ageing parents. Uma and Arun are children of Mamapapa, the apparently indivisible common identity that parents present. Yet, she loves people, poetry, and wandering, and is fearless and curious about new people and situations. The family is ruled by customs and traditions and their sole aim is to marry off the girls and educate the boys.

For one, as a lot of Americans enjoy meat, a lot of Indians are vegetarians. Despite her disappointments, Uma comes through as the survivor, avoiding an unfulfilling marriage, liek her sister's or a suicidal one, like that arranged for her pretty cousin. Though at the end of the novel she realizes her condition and she tried different means and ways to break the patriarchal norms. Uma lives in India, continuously trying to make something of her life yet struggles for so many different reasons. In India the sharing of meals assumes almost ritualistic importance. There are many beautiful and colourful descriptions in both parts of the novel and I was attatched to Uma, willing her to find a way out and knowing she probably would not. For instance, when Mother Agnes neglects to advocate for her kept tutoring, Uma begs for her mercy and flails uncontrollably savagely on the floor, making an open exhibition. The pictures that she paints with her prose are startlingly realistic, yet also gentle. In the end he was trapped in his life which decided by his parents in a similar way with Uma.
