Divergent is a science fiction novel written by Veronica Roth and published in 2011. It is the first book in the Divergent trilogy, followed by Insurgent and Allegiant.
The story is set in a dystopian society in the future where people are divided into five factions based on their personalities and values. These factions are Abnegation (selflessness), Amity (peacefulness), Candor (honesty), Dauntless (bravery), and Erudite (intelligence). At the age of 16, all citizens must choose which faction they want to belong to for the rest of their lives.
The main character is Beatrice Prior, a 16-year-old girl who is born into the Abnegation faction. She takes the aptitude test that helps her determine which faction she is best suited for, but the results are inconclusive, meaning that she is "divergent." This is a rare and dangerous trait because it means that she has the potential to fit into more than one faction, and the society views it as a threat to the social order.
Beatrice decides to leave her Abnegation family and join the Dauntless faction, where she renames herself Tris. She starts training to become a member of the faction, but she quickly realizes that the Dauntless initiation process is more brutal and dangerous than she expected. Jumping off a roof. After some hesitation, Beatrice chooses Dauntless. The factionless are the individuals that are not part of any faction because of being kicked out, not making it through initiation, or other unfortunate means. Under Jeanine's control, Tobias oversees the attack from the Dauntless control room. And I cannot believe that up until this point in that universe nobody questioned the validity of this structure.
There's Four - the super-hot looooooove interest. He's her teacher and she's completely sheltered - cue the romance. The first faction is Abnegation, which focuses on selflessness, Amity, which focuses on peace. There are only ten places that will become dauntless members. Tris reunites with her brother, and Four faces Marcus for the first time in more than two years.
The serum allows Jeanine to control the actions of Dauntless members, forcing them to arm themselves and take the lives of all Abnegation members. If nothing else, this was an awesome guilty pleasure read! Amity friendly people : farming Candor honest people : lawyers, and…? I didn't mind her love of guns at first - I kinda like guns, I'll admit that. She kicks ass literally and she is loving it. When she turns 16 she has to take a test to choose which faction best suits her. And you certainly never have to worry that your batshit-crazy intelligence-loving neighbours are keeping busy by plotting your evil demise. He grew past his problems and he became an amazing human being. With these novellas a chapter just closed, I think.

Tris joins up with Andrew, Caleb, and Marcus: they plan to break into the Dauntless headquarters and shut down the computers that control the soldiers.
