Devdas is a Bengali novel written by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay in 1917. It tells the story of Devdas, a wealthy young man from Calcutta, who falls in love with Parvati, a woman from a lower class family. Despite their deep love for each other, Devdas and Parvati are unable to be together due to societal expectations and class differences.

The novel explores themes of love, loss, and tragedy, as Devdas struggles to come to terms with the fact that he cannot have the woman he loves. It also touches upon issues of gender roles and expectations in traditional Bengali society, as Devdas and Parvati are both limited by the roles that have been prescribed for them.

One of the most striking aspects of the novel is its portrayal of Devdas as a flawed and complex character. He is a man who is torn between his love for Parvati and his sense of duty to his family and society. His actions are often selfish and short-sighted, and he ultimately destroys his own life and the lives of those around him.

Despite its tragic ending, Devdas has remained a popular and enduring novel in Bengali literature. It has been adapted into numerous films, plays, and other media, and its themes of love and loss continue to resonate with readers to this day.

In conclusion, Devdas is a classic Bengali novel that explores themes of love, loss, and tragedy through the story of a flawed and complex character. Its portrayal of gender roles and societal expectations has made it a timeless and enduring work of literature.

I sometimes wonder why we all have to grow old get burdened with so many responsibilities. I will not call it a depressing story but super emotional it indeed is and I again had that helplessness feeling while reading through the character's lives that I so much wished they did what I imagined them to do get some happiness in their life. The old one with Dilip Kumar is closer to the book. As of early 2014, Gita Press had sold close to 72 million copies of the Gita, 70 million copies of Tulsidas's works and 19 million copies of scriptures like the Puranas and Upanishads. Each of the characters in this book defines the very notion of a 'character' in a plot.

I was expecting some philosophical platonic love kind of plot, but what I found was confused lovers' dilemma. Chandramukhi falls in love with Devdas, but even when he is with her he can only think of Paro. From there, he writes a letter to Parvati, saying that they should simply continue only as friends. . Devdas' downfall is rooted in his pride and in his arrogant belief that he is b Devdas is one of my favorite movies. It is difficult to put down once started but it is worth it as the story is anyways short. His extreme reactions do not come without an explanation.

Even after death, the fear of losing caste by touching him persists, hence 'chandals' are called to dispose the body. On turning the last page of Devdas, a short novella that I could hardly bear to put down, whilst one is forced to confront feelings of sadness and loss at the tragedy that has just unfolded one is further provoked, not to weep, but to try and understand and explain them. All my life I have heard of this character Devdas who turns into an alcoholic because of his failed love. . The abridged translation of Devdas, Srikanta and six of Sarat Chandra's short stories brings to English readers a careful selection of writer's best. He wants to have whatever he wants whenever he wants it which isn't possible.

Caste and class difference keep the lovers apart. The sea of change in the three lead characters, the situations, the cross connections, love, affection, pain, sacrifice, regret and so much more is covered so subtly that my words and feelings will do no justice to how actually I felt while going through the story. It was tragic, for sure, but the ending was also kind of bittersweet. This book was written in 1917 and the concerns and lessons that it's author tried to teach are still very much relevant in this day and age. Wealth comes but is too late, and is of little use when love is lost. I rated it 5, not because it is 'so damn amazing', but because it lived up to the expectation I had.

Devdas is a man we can love as much as we can admit that he is flawed, perhaps because his flaw is all too understandable. The last few hours of Devdas's life while he whispers her name again and again and she wakes up from her sleep hearing someone calling her, but is unaware of what might be going on right outside her own gate, has the quality of a truth of a higher plane. One married to an old man with no love in her life and the other a nauch girl with no love and a fake life. The most recent one Dev D is a completely different take on the story, and I highly recommend that too. It is almost as if the writer was unconscious of what came through while he merely wrote the tale of an unfortunate man.

Devdas is a typical man who falls for the beauty rather than the personality. Lessons on destruction and blindness and not knowing how to live or to appreciate or be kind to the people around you. It also reinforces my belief that Bollywood can't be trusted to deal honestly with the caste question. The alternative family tradition of Parvati's family influences Devdas's mother's decision not to consider Parvati as Devdas' bride, especially as Parvati belongs to a trading becha-kena chottoghor lower family. āĻĄāĻŋ, āĻŽā§‡āϜ āĻĻāĻŋāĻĻāĻŋ, āĻŦāĻžāĻ—āĻĻāĻ¤ā§āϤ. But I would definitely like to give a standing ovation to Sarat Chandra who wrote such a beautiful story of complex characters - searching for something which they can never get. The original story is so matter-of-fact with minimal melodrama and is rooted in a certain time and a real cultural-societal milieu. In 1955, the way he moved his camera and took so many long shots and it's cinematography was top notch. Therefore it is not surprising and rather poetic that that the ones we call or term 'Devdas' today are mostly bound by love or a romance of the most fantastic sort, who thus cease to breach the barriers that lead to reality. It is the story of Devdas and Paro, childhood sweethearts who are torn apart when Devdas is sent away to Calcutta by his father, the local zamindar.

He cannot be with the strong women that he genuinely loves because of all the tiny things about women and reputation that remain unspoken in society. Sensitive and daring, his novels captivated the hearts and minds of thousands of readers not only in Bengal but all over India. I understand that the focus is on Devdas, but from watching the movie, I generally leaned on the women.

He completely destroys his life and even if you feel angry at him for rejecting the girl which I did not, because being an Indian I know how deeply rooted caste system was back then you will grieve for him by the end the story is finished. First things first, DEVDAS is a name we've all grown up hearing or talking about! This is perhaps one of the most honest books by Sharat Chandra apart from 'Srikanto'. Devdas is the main character of Devdas Pdf book. That was one of those rare moments from the story where I actually felt that Devdas too had a heart after-all especially the way he treats Paro throughout, the fallout, re-unions and the finale. It's a seemingly uncomplicated scene until one realises that it is Devdas' inability to understand and relate to Paro emotionally, perhaps as a woman, that condemns his relationship and ultimately himself to death. All my life I have heard of this character Devdas who turns into an alcoholic because of his failed love. There is a rawness in this tale that has not softened in his usual style and seems to be based on certain real life experiences of the author.
