Chinese Cinderella is a powerful and poignant memoir written by Adeline Yen Mah, a Chinese-American author and physician. The book tells the story of Adeline's difficult childhood and her struggles to find acceptance and love within her family.
Born in 1937 in Tianjin, China, Adeline is the youngest of five children and the only daughter of a wealthy Chinese businessman. Despite her privileged upbringing, Adeline's life is far from idyllic. Her mother died shortly after giving birth to her, and her father remarries a cruel and manipulative woman who treats Adeline and her siblings with contempt. Adeline's stepmother and older half-siblings resent her and go out of their way to make her feel worthless and unwanted. Adeline is dubbed "the little swallow" by her father, a nickname that reflects her status as a forgotten and overlooked member of the family.
As she grows older, Adeline's struggles only intensify. She is sent to live with her grandparents and aunt, but the arrangement proves to be just as unhappy as her life with her stepmother. Adeline is subjected to constant criticism and abuse from her aunt and grandparents, who believe that she is a burden and that she should be grateful for any scraps of attention or affection that they offer. Despite the challenges she faces, Adeline remains determined to succeed and prove her worth. She excels in her studies and becomes a top student at her school, but her achievements are met with indifference and even resentment from her family.
Despite the pain and suffering that Adeline endures throughout her childhood, she eventually finds hope and redemption. She meets a kind and compassionate teacher who recognizes her talents and encourages her to pursue her dreams. With her teacher's support, Adeline is able to gain the confidence and self-esteem that she needs to break free from the cycle of abuse and neglect that has defined her life.
Chinese Cinderella is a poignant and moving tale of one woman's journey to overcome adversity and find her place in the world. Adeline Yen Mah's story is a testament to the human spirit's indomitable strength and its ability to persevere in the face of even the most challenging circumstances.
