Maggie says that she would like to give Big Daddy her birthday present: the announcement of her being pregnant. But in the movie Maggie denies and apparently never had relations with Skipper. This is not a horrible movie by any means but it clearly is full of mendacity. . Cat on a Hot Tin Roof talks about infidelity, homosexuality, fatherhood, death, love, marriage, parenting, sterility, and truth like only Tennesse Williams can write.
These days we see quite a few good women drivers, for instance. All the hysterical running around and bellowing of the smell of mendacity just gave me a headache that I eventually soothed with two pills of ibuprofen. When something is festering in your memory or your imagination, laws of silence don't work, it's just like shutting a door and locking it on a house on fire in hope of forgetting that the house is burning. Williams gets hung up on the word "mendacity. The feelings Brick has for Maggie, that Maggie has towards Mae and her children and vice versa, the way Gooper feels about Brick, and the way Big Daddy feels towards Big Momma are unchanging.
