Canon Inc. is a Japanese multinational corporation that specializes in the manufacture of imaging and optical products, including cameras, camcorders, photocopiers, and computer printers. The company was founded in 1937 by Takeshi Mitarai, Goro Yoshida, Saburo Uchida, and Takeo Maeda, who named the company after the Buddhist goddess of mercy, Kwanon.
The company began as a manufacturer of precision optical instruments, such as telescopes and binoculars. In the 1950s, Canon developed its first camera, the Canonflex, which was a single-lens reflex (SLR) camera with a focal plane shutter. This camera was followed by several other SLR models, including the Canon 7 and Canon Pellix.

May 1959 saw Canon release the Canonflex, 35mm SLR, which contained numerous unique features, notably, on its base, a wind-on lever which aided rapid shutter-release. When they needed optics they generally sought outside help to design their lenses or they purchased defunct optical companies. In 1934 Mitarai and his colleagues developed Japan's first 35-millimeter camera, closely patterned after the German Leica 35-millimeter camera, the industry standard. The T series were highly successful although the advances in technology were beginning to have an effect on the usefulness of the FD mount.
