Calico Joe is a novel by John Grisham, published in 2012. The novel tells the story of Paul Tracey, a young baseball player who becomes a star player for the Chicago Cubs in the 1970s. Tracey is known as "Calico Joe" due to his distinctive orange and black striped uniform, and he quickly becomes a fan favorite due to his impressive hitting skills.

I guess I'll start with the reasons this book earned 4 stars. . Calico Joe falls into that bunch, but in reality it only took me about 18 hours with a night of sleep thrown into the mix. It takes the reader through all of these feelings with a gentle grace. That is far from easy.
Warren sits down and tells Joe the truth, that he aimed at him intentionally, and apologizes. I liked the acknowledgment that they exist. This is not a spoiler, the son's relationship with his father is highly estranged outlined on page 1. The ball struck Joe above his right eye where his face was not protected by his batting helmet and cracked his skull in three places. The audio book is competently read by Erik Singer. Paul wanted to play baseball and had a promising future, but he was continually criticized and abused by his alcoholic father.
This book shows the results of that in a wonderfully, emotionally, literary story! I al The place where this book failed was at the beginning. Maybe it would have worked better for me if it was based around a sport I am more familiar with. My heart broke for him in the past, his knowledge of what was going to happen, and then having to live with it. JB bases his entire artistic career on painting portraits of his friends, while Malcolm takes care of them by designing their apartments and houses. Warren decides to travel to Calico Rock and meet with Joe Castle. Since it is so distant, all of the feelings and motivations of his father are also removed from our view.
The ending was great, because really the people that needed the connection to happen were Joe and Paul. When Paul asks Warren to meet with Joe and reconcile that fateful day in 1973, Warren refuses to even acknowledge any fault of his own, maintaining that he accidentally hit Joe in the head. Decades later, long estranged from his father, Paul learns that Warren is dying of pancreatic cancer, and he decides to force his father to confront what he did to Joe Castle.
