Before We Were Free I recommend this book because, it has a unique plotline, and is full of interesting characters and settings. I would say kids from 6th grade up could read it but they might not fully grasp the magnitude of the book. This book because it was told from the perspective of a kid, made it easy for me to relate and understand what was happening. She also begins to see that the adults around her are involved in more deceptions than she knows—not only was Mami lying about the Garcías being home, but the SIM seemed to only be pretending to look for the Garcías, since they apparently want Papi instead. This hit me hard thinking that my family could have been easily killed and my family and my life would have not existed.
