Bless Me, Ultima is a coming-of-age novel written by Rudolfo Anaya. The novel, published in 1972, follows the story of Antonio Marez, a Chicano boy growing up in New Mexico during World War II.

Anaya was born in 1937 in Pastura, New Mexico, and grew up in a family of farmers and sheepherders. He attended the University of New Mexico, where he earned a bachelor's degree in English and a master's degree in guidance and counseling. Anaya is known for his contributions to Chicano literature and his depiction of the Chicano experience in the Southwest.

Bless Me, Ultima is considered a classic of Chicano literature and has been widely read and studied in high school and college classrooms. The novel explores themes of identity, cultural conflict, and the search for meaning and purpose in life.

At its core, the novel is about Antonio's struggle to find his place in the world and to understand the complex and often conflicting values of the various people and communities he encounters. This includes his parents, who represent different cultural traditions; his mentor, the curandera Ultima, who introduces him to the world of magic and spirituality; and his friends and classmates, who are struggling with their own issues and challenges.

Anaya's writing is rich with imagery and symbolism, and he uses the landscape and culture of the Southwest to give the novel a sense of place and authenticity. He also incorporates elements of folklore and mythology into the story, adding depth and meaning to the characters and themes.

Overall, Bless Me, Ultima is a powerful and moving exploration of the human experience and the challenges and choices we face as we grow and mature. It is a testament to Anaya's skill as a writer and his ability to capture the essence of the Chicano experience in a way that is both universal and deeply personal.
