My perceptions and what I observe over time have shifted. Honestly, there is a lot Serial Maniac I've read this two, maybe three, times over the years. The ONE thing that this book could have done without and the reason it has 4 stars is all of the puns and corny cliché lines.

Alex Cross of the W 3 stars I went through a whole James Patterson phase when I was in high school. And it doesn't matter so much when they're at home on Maple Street. But he also has two adorable kids of his own, and they are his own special vulnerabilities. If I could give this half a star, I would. How this managed to become a number one bestseller is probably the biggest mystery of the book. Being a parent now probably has something to do with that. Alex Cross is such a strong main character.

Despite his anger at his boss's priorities, Cross finds himself drawn into the kidnapping plot, crossing boundaries that find him accusing his lover of murder. If your stance is based on opinion, I cannot. She later shoots him in the head, after coldly deducing that Cross has likely figured out his guilt. He's raising his two kids with the help of his grandmother who he affectionately calls Nana Mama.
Stephen King once said I'm paraphasing here that authors should read some novels for the beautiful language and others for the fun of the plot. We are in the middle of painting our house, and Alex Cross kept me company while I worked a lot of hours outdoors. Through his investigation, Cross discovers a connection between the kidnapper and the killer of the black families he was originally assigned to investigate. This book is garbage. And that's only how I feel about the writing.

I am embarrassed to say that this is the first James Patterson book I have read excluding his book shot series. He was one of many standout characters in this novel. Everyone, in one way or another, just didn't feel real and I think that was definitely due to the script.
