One of Alexander's most trusted companions and confidants was a man named Hephaestion.
Hephaestion was born in 356 BCE in Pella, the capital of ancient Macedonia. He was a member of the Companion cavalry, a prestigious group of soldiers who served as the personal bodyguard of Alexander the Great. Hephaestion was known for his bravery and loyalty to Alexander, and the two men developed a close friendship that lasted throughout their lives.
In addition to his military accomplishments, Hephaestion was also a skilled diplomat and helped Alexander to establish relationships with the various peoples and cultures that he encountered during his conquests. He played a key role in the creation of the League of Corinth, an alliance of Greek city-states that was formed to defend against Persian aggression.
